RECs – Renewable Energy Communities represent a new way of experiencing energy: more local, more sustainable, more equitable. They are groups of citizens, businesses, public entities, and associations that come together voluntarily to produce, consume, and share renewable energy, with economic and social benefits distributed among the participants.

How a Renewable Energy Community Works

Each participant can choose to:

  • be a Consumer, by consuming energy produced by the community;

  • also become a Prosumer, meaning they produce renewable energy (e.g., with photovoltaics) and share any surplus with other members.

The shared energy is managed through digital monitoring and balancing systems, and is rewarded with government incentives (Reward Tariff) for each kWh virtually shared among the members.

Benefits of Renewable Energy Communities

  • Lower energy bills
    Members consume local, renewable energy, reducing grid-related costs.

  • Access to incentives
    The State rewards energy sharing with incentive tariffs for each shared kWh.

  • Local development
    Resources stay within the territory, creating value for the community.

  • Social support
    RECs can allocate part of the energy and revenues to assist families facing energy poverty, in collaboration with social services.

  • Ecological transition and active citizenship
    Taking part in a REC means actively contributing to emission reduction and to a shift in the energy model.
